The short version
This comparison is built from the two official pricing pages, both captured on 2026-09-14 (Asana: full rendered page; ClickUp: both billing states — see the ClickUp pricing check for the full breakdown). It is a terms comparison; we did not create a workspace on either product.
The two vendors give away opposite things:
- Asana gives storage but not seats. Free forever is capped at 2 users (“up to 2 users can collaborate for free”), but those 2 users get unlimited tasks and projects, list/ board/calendar views, unlimited files up to 100 MB each, 100+ integrations and time- tracking integrations.
- ClickUp gives seats but not storage. Free Forever allows unlimited tasks and unlimited free-plan members, but only 60 MB total storage, 5 spaces, 1 form, and trial access to the Gantt/Timeline/Workload views that make it a planning platform.
Pick by which ceiling your team hits on day one: a 2-person team that stores files is at home on Asana free; a 10-person team that mostly works in tasks will hit Asana’s paywall at member #3 and ClickUp’s at the first large attachment.
Pricing side by side
| Asana | ClickUp | |
|---|---|---|
| Free tier | 2 users, unlimited tasks/projects, files up to 100 MB each, list/board/calendar | unlimited members/tasks, 60 MB total storage, 5 spaces, 1 form, Kanban/sprints/calendar |
| Paid entry | Starter $10.99/user/mo billed annually | Unlimited $7/user/mo yearly / $10 monthly |
| Mid tier | Advanced $24.99/user/mo billed annually (goals, workload, time tracking) | Business $12 yearly / $19 monthly (dashboards, 5K automations, SSO) |
| Top tier | Enterprise / Enterprise+ custom | Enterprise custom (SAML, SCIM, HIPAA, data residency) |
| Guests on paid | unlimited free guests on Starter+ | permission-controlled guests from Unlimited (free guests must have full access) |
| AI | AI Studio Basic bundled (50K/75K/200K credits by tier); Plus/Pro paid | trial on free; Brain $9/user, Everything AI $28/user sold separately |
| Billing model | per user, annual headline prices | per user, both yearly and monthly printed (monthly +43–58%) |
Two price reads:
- At a 5-person team, yearly entry is $54.95/mo on Asana Starter vs $35/mo on ClickUp Unlimited — ClickUp is ~36% cheaper at the entry tier, but that comparison excludes AI: adding ClickUp Everything AI ($28) flips it to $175 vs Asana Starter’s included AI Studio Basic.
- Asana does not print a monthly-billing price on the main cards the way ClickUp does; its headline figures are annual per-user rates. ClickUp prints both ($7/$10, $12/$19), which makes its monthly premium explicit (42.9% on Unlimited, 58.3% on Business). Budget month-to-month at your own risk on Asana; verify the monthly figure at checkout.
Where each free tier actually breaks
Asana free breaks at headcount. The 2-user cap is absolute — the third collaborator requires Starter for everyone on the team, which is why Asana free is honestly described on the page as “for individuals or small teams starting out.” Everything else (tasks, projects, views, per-file storage) is generous; a freelancer and one client collaborator can run real work at $0.
ClickUp free breaks at operations, not people. With unlimited members, a whole team fits, but:
- 60 MB shared storage is exhausted by a handful of video clips or slide decks; Asana allows 100 MB per file on free.
- Gantt, Timeline, Workload, Map and Mind Map are trial-only — the cross-team planning views sit behind a trial marker, so the free product is effectively a Kanban/docs tool even though the paid product is a full PM suite.
- 1-day activity history, 30-day chat history, 1 form, 3 whiteboards, guests with no permission scoping (free guests must be given full access).
So Asana monetizes team size and ClickUp monetizes storage, views and governance — a clean inversion.
AI packaging is the other structural gap
- Asana bundles AI Studio Basic on every paid tier, with a credit allowance printed per plan (50K/month on Starter, 75K on Advanced, 200K on Enterprise+); AI Studio Plus and Pro are paid upgrades, but the baseline AI is in the seat price.
- ClickUp sells AI as a separate product: free plans get trial access, then Brain AI $9/user/mo or Everything AI $28/user/mo, plus super credits at $10 per 10,000. On ClickUp’s $7 Unlimited seat, full AI costs 4x the seat (see the ClickUp review for the $35 all-in math). If your decision is “PM tool with AI included,” Asana’s Starter bundles it; ClickUp’s headline price does not.
Who should pick which (terms-level)
- Pick Asana if you are 1–2 people who want unlimited tasks/projects with real file storage and bundled AI on the first paid tier, or you need unlimited free guests (clients, agencies) on a paid plan. The entry price is higher per seat, but it is an all-in number.
- Pick ClickUp if you are a team of 3+ that wants to stay free as long as possible, you live in Kanban/tasks rather than heavy file storage, and you either skip AI or budget it as a separate line. Unlimited seats at $7 undercuts Asana Starter by ~36% before AI.
- The crossover to watch: teams large enough to need Asana Advanced ($24.99) should compare it against ClickUp Business ($12) plus the AI they actually use — Asana’s bundled AI and mature goals/workload features vs ClickUp’s lower seat price with AI metered separately.
No star rating: this is pricing-page analysis, not a hands-on build. Full single-tool context: ClickUp pricing check.
