The short version
Two automation tools that get compared constantly and priced in completely different units. We captured both pricing pages in proxied browser sessions one day apart — Zapier on 2026-09-22 in both billing states, PhantomBuster on 2026-09-21 in both billing states — and read every number out of the rendered text layer. This is a terms comparison: no account was created on either platform and no Zap or Phantom was run.
Three structural differences decide the bill:
- $69 is a false-friend price. It is Zapier’s Team tier billed annually and PhantomBuster’s Start tier billed monthly. The two pages default to opposite billing states, so screenshots floating around the internet labeled “$69” are showing two different products at two different commitment levels.
- The discount claims don’t match their own arithmetic — in opposite directions. Zapier’s toggle says “Pay yearly (Save 33%)” and the math is exactly 33.3% ($19.99 ÷ $29.99). PhantomBuster’s banner says “Save 20%!” and the page’s own numbers come in under 20% on every tier (18.8–19.8%). Both pages were re-divided by us, not copied.
- Hitting your limit bills you on one and stops you on the other. Zapier’s FAQ, verbatim from today’s capture: “Pick any task tier, and if you reach your limit, you’ll be switched to pay-as-you-go unless you turn it off or move up to a higher tier.” PhantomBuster’s FAQ, verbatim from yesterday’s capture: “Your automations will pause until your execution time resets or you upgrade your plan. No overage charges are applied automatically.”
Both pages, both states (USD, captured 2026-09-21/22)
PhantomBuster (2026-09-21)
| Plan | Monthly | Annual (per month) | Annual upfront | What the meter counts |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Trial | $0 (14 days) | — | — | 5 slots · 2 h execution · 50 email credits · 1k AI credits · 100 URL-finder credits |
| Start | $69 | $56 | $672 | 5 slots · 20 h execution · 500 email / 10k AI / 1k URL-finder credits |
| Grow | $159 | $128 | $1,536 | 15 slots · 80 h · 2.5k email / 30k AI / 10k URL-finder |
| Scale | $439 | $352 | $4,224 | 50 slots · 300 h · 10k email / 90k AI / 20k URL-finder |
Every tier, trial included, prints “Unlimited users” — there is no seat dimension at all.
Zapier (2026-09-22)
| Plan | Monthly | Annual (per month) | What the meter counts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 forever | $0 | 100 tasks/month, two-step Zaps |
| Professional | from $29.99 | from $19.99 | task tiers (2K / 10K / 100K / 1M / 2M slider) |
| Team | from $103.50 | from $69 | tasks + 25 users |
| Enterprise | contact | contact | — |
One meter, one number: a “task”. Zapier’s own FAQ warns the meter is fuzzy — “AI model tier, code runtime, and connector type each affect how many tasks an action uses.”
The $69 collision, priced out
The cheapest honest comparison: what does the same card price buy on each platform?
| at $56–69/mo | at $103–159/mo | |
|---|---|---|
| PhantomBuster | Start ($69 mo / $56 annual): 20 h execution, 500 email credits, unlimited users | Grow ($159 mo / $128 annual): 80 h, 2,500 email credits |
| Zapier | Professional ($69 annual buys a task tier, not a fixed plan floor — “from” prices depend on the slider you pick) | Team ($103.50 mo / $69 annual): tasks + 25 users |
Note the asymmetry in the word “from”. Zapier’s Professional and Team prices are floors that float with the task-volume slider — $19.99 is the smallest tier, not the plan price. PhantomBuster’s prices are fixed per plan; the slider is on execution hours inside the tier. When you see “Zapier starts at $19.99, PhantomBuster at $56” in a roundup, the first number is a variable and the second assumes annual billing.
The discount-claim split
Both pages advertise a saving. Only one of them is right, per their own printed numbers:
| Page claim | Our division | Real saving |
|---|---|---|
| Zapier: “Pay yearly (Save 33%)” (2026-09-22) | $19.99 ÷ $29.99 = 0.6667 | 33.3% ✓ |
| Zapier Team | $69 ÷ $103.50 = 0.6667 | 33.3% ✓ |
| PhantomBuster: “Save 20%!” (2026-09-21) | $56 ÷ $69 = 0.8116 | 18.8% ✗ |
| PhantomBuster Grow | $128 ÷ $159 = 0.8050 | 19.5% ✗ |
| PhantomBuster Scale | $352 ÷ $439 = 0.8018 | 19.8% ✗ |
PhantomBuster rounds up on its own discount banner. Small, but it belongs in the same honesty ledger as ClickUp’s “Save up to 30%” that measured 36.8% (ClickUp pricing check) and Jotform’s “up to 20%” at 12.8–23.3%. Zapier, today, measures clean.
The billing-behavior difference that matters more than price
Zapier’s overage is on by default — hitting the task limit silently switches the account to pay-as-you-go rates unless you actively turn it off. PhantomBuster’s limit is a hard pause — automations stop, nothing new is billed. Same “run your automations” marketing, opposite failure modes: one surprises you with a bill, the other surprises you with downtime.
And the unit being metered is a category difference, not a size difference. Zapier meters workflow steps across 8,000+ apps. PhantomBuster meters execution time, slots, and three credit pools for scraping and outreach through your own logged-in social accounts — a use case Zapier does not sell and LinkedIn’s terms do not bless (PhantomBuster’s own FAQ hedges this: it runs “within platform constraints”; the full discussion is in our PhantomBuster pricing check). If your workflow is “when a form is submitted, update a sheet,” you are not shopping between these two products at all.
Free entry, side by side
- Zapier: a standing free plan — $0 forever, 100 tasks/month, two-step Zaps. The capture prints “Try it free” with no card language on the Free card itself.
- PhantomBuster: no standing free plan printed on the page — the first card is a 14-day trial (5 slots, 2 h execution, exports capped at 10 rows) with “Start free trial.”
Five years of light Zapier usage costs $0. A PhantomBuster trial ends on day 15.
Verdict
Not a winner-takes-all comparison because they barely overlap: Zapier is a connective-tissue automation platform with a real free tier and default-on overage; PhantomBuster is a lead-sourcing engine with fixed pause-not-bill limits and unlimited users at every price. If both appear on your shortlist, the decision is use-case first — but if you do buy PhantomBuster, know that the monthly list prices are $69/$159/$439 and the “Save 20%” is really 18.8–19.8%.
What we verified / what we did not
Verified: all Zapier figures from the live page in both billing states on 2026-09-22 (text-layer dumps archived); all PhantomBuster figures from the live page in both states on 2026-09-21 (our PhantomBuster check has the full captures and images). Both toggles were exercised in a real browser session, not read from markup defaults.
Not verified: no account on either platform, no Zap or Phantom executed, no invoice generated; Zapier’s task-slider prices above the 2K floor were not captured (the page renders them only after dragging the slider); PhantomBuster’s post-trial fallback to a restricted free plan comes from its help-center documentation, not the pricing page, and is flagged as reported in the parent article.
